Asao Ogawa, MD, PhD, is Chief of the Department of Psycho-oncology at the National Cancer Center Hospital East in Japan. He specializes in managing psychiatric and psychological symptoms in patients undergoing cancer treatment and provides support for shared decision-making in complex clinical scenarios. His research focuses on developing educational interventions for multidisciplinary teams and advancing novel techniques for symptom relief. In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Ogawa serves as a member of the national advisory committee on palliative care, where he contributes to shaping healthcare policy and improving care standards at a national level. He is committed to bridging clinical practice and policy through evidence-based, patient-centered approaches. With expertise in both psychosocial oncology and implementation research, he works to promote scalable care models that support vulnerable populations and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration across Japan’s cancer care system.

2004年大阪大学大学院医学系研究科修了。2007年より国立がんセンター(現国立がん研究センター)東病院精神腫瘍科医員、2015年より現職。専門は、精神医学、精神腫瘍学、老年精神医学。がん医療における精神心理的支援を実践しながら、新規症状緩和技術の開発に取り組んでいる。厚生労働省の「がんの緩和ケアに係る部会」構成員として参画し、がんの診断時からの緩和ケアの提供体制の構築や、緩和ケアの推進に関与している。
